International Cargo Packaging Guide

Proper packaging is the single most important factor in ensuring your international shipment arrives safely. This guide covers professional packing techniques for every type of cargo — from personal parcels to commercial exports — so your goods survive the rigors of international transit.

Why Packaging Matters for International Shipping

International cargo passes through multiple handling points — pickup, warehouse sorting, airport or port loading, transit, destination customs, and final delivery. At each stage, your package may be stacked, moved by forklift, exposed to temperature changes, or subjected to vibration. Export-grade packaging is designed to protect your goods through this entire journey, not just a single local delivery.

Choosing the Right Carton

For international shipping, always use corrugated cartons rated for export. Single-wall cartons are acceptable for lightweight air cargo parcels under 10kg. Double-wall cartons are essential for sea freight, heavy items, or any shipment over 10kg. The carton's burst strength should be at least 12 kg/cm² for air cargo and 16 kg/cm² for sea freight. Never reuse old cartons that have lost their structural integrity — weakened corners and softened walls lead to collapse during transit.

How to Pack Clothes and Garments

Fold garments neatly and place them in plastic bags before putting them in the carton — this protects against moisture and humidity, especially for sea freight. Use silica gel packets for humidity control. For high-value garments, consider vacuum packing to reduce volume and prevent wrinkles. For retail garments that must arrive wrinkle-free, ask about our hanger shipment (GOH) service. Pack shoes in their original shoe boxes, then place the shoe boxes inside the export carton with cushioning material between them.

How to Pack Electronics and Fragile Items

Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap (minimum 2 layers). Use foam inserts or packing peanuts to fill all empty space in the carton — items should not shift when the box is shaken. Mark the carton clearly with 'FRAGILE' labels on multiple sides. For electronics, use anti-static bubble wrap and ensure the item is protected from both impact and static discharge. Double-boxing (a smaller box inside a larger one with cushioning between) is recommended for very fragile items.

How to Pack Documents and Certificates

Place documents in waterproof plastic sleeves or document pouches. For important certificates, use rigid cardboard mailers to prevent bending. For legal documents, consider tracked express courier rather than standard cargo. Never fold certificates — use document tubes for large certificates or diplomas. Keep a digital copy of all important documents before shipping.

How to Pack Commercial and Export Goods

Commercial shipments require packing that meets both shipping and customs requirements. Each carton must be clearly labeled with contents, quantity, weight, and carton number (matching your packing list). Use uniform carton sizes where possible for efficient palletizing. For sea freight, use moisture-resistant cartons and consider liner bags inside the container. Palletize cartons for easy forklift handling — shrink-wrap pallets securely.

How to Pack Food and Perishable Items

Only non-perishable, commercially packaged food should be shipped internationally. Use airtight containers and vacuum-sealed bags. Check destination country restrictions before shipping any food item — many countries (especially Australia, USA, and EU) have strict biosecurity rules. Include a clear ingredient list on the outside of the package. For commercial food exports, proper labeling and health certificates are required.

Waterproof Protection for Sea Freight

Sea freight containers are exposed to humidity and condensation during ocean transit. For sea cargo shipments, line the inside of each carton with a plastic bag, use moisture-resistant export cartons, and include silica gel packets. For container loads, consider placing desiccant bags inside the container. Never use cardboard that has been exposed to water — it loses structural strength.

Labeling and Addressing Your Shipment

Label every carton with the complete receiver address, including name, street address, city, postal code, and country. Include a return address. For multi-carton shipments, label each carton as '1 of X', '2 of X', etc. Place a packing list inside the first carton and also attach a copy to the outside. Use waterproof labels or cover paper labels with clear packing tape. Never write directly on the carton with markers that can smudge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my own boxes for shipping?

Yes, but they must be sturdy corrugated cartons rated for international shipping. Old or weakened boxes may not survive transit. We can provide export-grade cartons if needed.

Do you provide packing materials?

Yes, we provide export-grade cartons, bubble wrap, packing tape, and all necessary materials. We also offer professional packing services at our office or during home pickup.

How do I pack liquids for international shipping?

Liquids must be in leak-proof containers with sealed caps. Place liquid containers upright in the carton with absorbent material around them in case of leakage. Some liquids are restricted — check before shipping.

Should I seal every edge of the carton?

Yes, seal all seams of the carton with packing tape (not masking tape). Use H-taping method: one strip along the center seam and strips along both end seams for maximum security.
