Prohibited & Restricted Items Guide

Before shipping internationally, it's essential to know what you can and cannot send. Prohibited items cannot be shipped at all. Restricted items can be shipped only with proper documentation, licenses, or approvals. This guide explains the categories and helps you determine if your items can be shipped.

Universally Prohibited Items

These items are prohibited by virtually all carriers and destination countries: illegal drugs and narcotics, weapons and firearms (without proper licensing), explosives and fireworks, counterfeit goods and IP-infringing products, radioactive materials, biological hazards and infectious substances, pornographic material, and stolen property. Attempting to ship these items can result in criminal prosecution, shipment confiscation, and carrier account termination.

Dangerous Goods (Hazmat)

Dangerous goods are items that pose a risk during transport. They include: flammable liquids (perfume, alcohol, solvents), flammable gases (aerosols, lighter fluid), lithium batteries (loose or in devices), corrosive substances (cleaning chemicals, acids), oxidizers and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, and compressed gases. Some dangerous goods can be shipped with special documentation and packaging (IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations for air, IMDG for sea). Contact us before shipping any potentially dangerous item.

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries (both loose and installed in devices) are restricted for air freight due to fire risk. Loose lithium batteries cannot be sent via air cargo. Batteries installed in devices (phones, laptops) can be shipped with proper documentation. Spare batteries packed with equipment have quantity limits. For sea freight, lithium battery restrictions are less stringent. We advise on compliant packaging and documentation for battery shipments.

Medicines and Pharmaceuticals

Medicine export from Pakistan requires: a valid prescription (for personal quantities), medicines in original packaging, a letter from the sender explaining the purpose, and for some destinations, prior approval from the destination country's health authority (MHRA for UK, FDA for USA, SFDA for Saudi Arabia). Controlled substances and Schedule drugs require additional documentation. We handle medicine export with full compliance documentation.

Food and Agricultural Products

Food items are subject to strict biosecurity regulations, especially for Australia, New Zealand, USA, EU, and Japan. Commercially packaged and sealed food may be allowed with proper documentation. Homemade food, fresh produce, meat, dairy, and animal products are typically prohibited or require health certificates. Always check destination country food import rules before shipping. For commercial food exports, health certificates and phytosanitary certificates may be required.

Alcohol and Tobacco

Alcohol and tobacco products are restricted or prohibited in many destinations. UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other Islamic countries prohibit alcohol. Most countries restrict tobacco quantities and require duty payment. Shipping alcohol and tobacco requires special licenses and declarations. Contact us before shipping any alcohol or tobacco products.

Valuable Items

Valuable items including cash, currency, precious metals, jewelry, and gemstones are restricted by most carriers. High-value items may require: declared value documentation, special insurance coverage, and secure shipping methods. Some carriers have maximum value limits. We can advise on shipping valuable items with appropriate insurance and security measures.

Destination-Specific Restrictions

Each country has its own restricted and prohibited items list. UAE prohibits items contrary to Islamic values, e-cigarettes, and pork products. Australia prohibits most biological material and requires fumigation for wooden items. USA restricts FDA-regulated items without prior notice. EU requires CE marking for regulated products. Saudi Arabia requires SASO/SABER certification for many products. Always check destination-specific restrictions before shipping.

What to Do If You're Unsure

If you're unsure whether an item can be shipped, contact Haideri International Cargo before packing. Our team can advise on: whether the item is prohibited or restricted, what documentation is needed, which carrier can accept it, and which destinations allow it. It's always better to ask before shipping than to have your shipment confiscated or returned.
